Honesty
Life Thoughts

“We need a baptism of honesty in the courts of the Lord.”
(Leonard Ravenhill)

“Honesty is the best policy.”
(Unknown)

“Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed and faithful are the wounds of a friend.
(Prov. 27:5&6)

I feel that one of the most elementary characteristics of the Christian life is missing in the church today, Honesty. The church should be the safest place in the world to speak and seek truth, yet many of our churches are more like masquerade parties than iron sharpening mills. Our insecurities run deep while our relationships remain shallow. Offences are at an all time high while openness is at an all time low. We are admonished not to talk behind people’s backs (I agree), but who will talk to you face-to-face? Where is the love and maturity that was exhibited by the Apostle Paul when he rebuked Peter to his face, because he needed it? And where is the security and maturity of Peter that enabled him to receive the rebuke and grow from it? Church members talk about each other because they can’t talk to each other. Church staffs talk behind closed doors because there is no open forum to share constructive criticism without feeling like their jobs would be threatened.

To challenge popular opinion these days is to set yourself up for rejection. Never has there been a greater example of secure leadership shown to me than by my spiritual father, Tim Lindsay. He often gathered the men of the church around him and asked them to share honestly about the state of the church, their personal convictions and their deep concerns for the church. I remember those days well. I wish all of you could have had what I had. In fact, I have carried that throughout my whole Christian experience. I have refused to surround myself with “YES” men. My relationships with other men have been either deep or short lived. There is no time to waste on being superficial. It’s time to grow up. It’s time to put an end to secret sessions and say it like it is.

A mature man of God will never reject honesty as long as it is delivered with humility and as long as people know you have their best in mind. Honesty is not for the faint hearted, but then again neither is Christianity.
